The Riverside Alumni Association has provided thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors over the last several years. Each edition of Scholarship Spotlight will feature one of those students and life after high school.
John Mayer graduated in 2007 and attended The Ohio State University. He earned a Bachelor of Material Science and Engineering in 2011.
John picks up the story from here:
Upon graduation from Ohio State I moved to Ashland, Kentucky, and accepted a job as quality engineer for AK Steel. AK Steel produces various types of carbon and stainless steels with a focus on supplying to the automotive industry. Pretty much any vehicle on the road today has some piece of steel on it made by AK.
My job was to improve quality on a hot dip galvanizing line and help handle any issues found by our customers. After a year of being an engineer, I was promoted into the job I currently hold, which is section manager of quality. This job has me managing 20 people in four different labs across our plant. My job is to oversee the testing and certification of properties for all steel produced by our plant.
I have been in this job for almost five years and while often stressful, it always keeps my interest and teaches me new things every day.
During my first year in Kentucky I met my beautiful wife Stephanie, who is a nurse in Huntington, West Virginia. We were married in September 2013 and bought a house the next year in Catlettsburg, Kentucky.
Stephanie has always loved Dalmatians but was never allowed to get one while growing up. So once we had our own house, the next thing we did was get two Dalmatian puppies named Scarlett and Maverick. They have brought so much joy and entertainment to our lives.
But the most exciting news is the birth of our first baby. Aniston Loralee was born in May.
Thank you for this opportunity and I appreciate your interest in how I fared over the past ten years.
